Harris County Appraisal District
11/23/2005 7:56:00 AM

The Harris County Appraisal District will be a place all real estate investors will get to know. We argue property tax appraisals assiduously there.

Understanding how HCAD works, begins with understanding that they have record of all property in their county. They list rates for the taxing jurisdictions of their county. They assess value of every property. Then, the taxing entities, such as schools, tax accordingly.

You have two ways to affect how much money this system costs you:

1) Protest your property taxes
2) Vote for lower spending/taxes at each of the entity levels

(In some cases, properties lie in Ft. Bend County, but still have appraisal district information on HCAD because they pay City of Houston taxes, and HCAD lists the taxing information for the City of Houston.)
